Utilitarianism, femininity, power, and play are some of the words that describe the capsule.
Shayne Oliver is the next name to enter the Jean Paul Gaultier guest designer program. Shayne Oliver, co-founder of Hood By Air who left the design collective in 2023, will design a ready-to-wear capsule for the French brand.
In this capsule, Oliver applies a New York alternative culture perspective to the gothic romance, intense drama, and playful kitsch found in Gaultier’s fashion archives. The main inspiration is Gaultier’s disruptive influence on the fashion scene during the 1990s, particularly his integration of casual items like denim into high fashion.
This ethos resonates with Oliver’s own fashion philosophy, as demonstrated in his past work with Hood By Air, where he reimagined quintessential elements of American streetwear such as T-shirts and durags, infusing them with social commentary and runway flair.
Described as a blend of utilitarianism, femininity, power, and play, Oliver envisions the collection as suitable for both couture events and intimate settings.
Scheduled for launch in New York on May 6 (known as the first Monday of May and Met Gala day), Gaultier plans to host a late-night party for the collection on one of fashion’s most anticipated evenings.
