The formidable South Korean record label YG Entertainment built BLACKPINK from the ground up with the express goal of experiencing such success. Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa, and Rosé joined the group in 2016 after completing years of training in a quasi-academy. They practiced dancing, singing, and rapping there while competing against a dozen other young girls who shared their aspirations to become K-pop stars. In 2019, Jennie explained to Billboard that “someone would come in with a piece of paper and stick it on a wall, and it would say who did best, who did worst, and who’s going home.”

Why do they go by the name BLACKPINK?

The group members, whom YG Entertainment created under the well-known K-pop trainee system in South Korea, went through an audition process with the entertainment company to become “trainees,” or pupils, to make their recording artist debut in the future. When BLACKPINK made its debut, their record company YG Entertainment stated that the name meant the group had more than beauty; there was also talent, strength, and toughness. The meaning of BLACKPINK seeks to defy the conventional understanding of pink. “Pink is frequently used to convey prettiness. However, BLACKPINK intends to express that ‘Pretty isn’t everything. It also represents how they are a group that includes talent and beauty.

BLACKPINK has been a group for how long?

BLACKPINK made their musical debut in 2016 with the release of the two-song Square One mini album “Whistle” and “Boombayah.” BLACKPINK was the first girl group from YG Entertainment in seven years. Therefore, the launch received significant K-pop promotion.

Boombayah sprinted to the top of the Billboard World Digital Songs chart as their debut single, and their success grew with subsequent releases the following year. BLACKPINK garnered media attention in 2018 with their track “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” from the EP Square Up. The trio expanded a few months later by collaborating with Dua Lipa on the song “Kiss and Make

Up.”

What is so different about BLACKPINK?

The group’s captivating stage presence and songs with bilingual lyrics that discuss vulnerability and independence are responsible for many of BLACKPINK’s successes. BLACKPINK is renowned for its distinctive video “concepts” or style for each song. BLACKPINK frequently uses five or six whole different concepts (complete with varied hair colors and attire) in their music videos, as opposed to the two or three themes that certain K-pop videos may use.
