The red carpet for the 2023 Oscars was just the start of Hollywood’s Greatest Night. The chance of making Oscars history awaited many of the nominees as they primped and posed for swarms of photographers and fans on Sunday as celebrities from all over the world gathered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood to celebrate and remember achievements in film.
The Oscars 2023 red carpet was energized and excited by celebrities like Florence Pugh, Jessica Chastain, Lady Gaga, Austin Butler, and Rihanna. Before the 2023 Oscars, actors performed their greatest fashion on the red carpet, capping off an exciting awards season with their best ensembles. The Oscars highlighted the year’s top performances in movies. Many celebrities opted for styles that contrasted a traditional and modern look, creating appearances that felt recognizable (glamorous and flashy!) and completely new.
The evening featured a lot of vibrant clothing (though the literal carpet was champagne-hued instead of red). Cate Blanchett looked elegant and understated in a draped Louis Vuitton dress with an aqua-blue accent up top. Among the ceremony’s presenters and the star of Top Gun: Maverick, Jennifer Connelly, wore a Louis Vuitton piece that added a dazzling neck structure to basic, straight black. Hong Chau selected a delicate pink Prada column gown with a black sequin train. Kerry Condon, an actor, brought cheer with her strapless yellow Versace dress. Lady Gaga appeared in a black Versace dress with a revealing corset bodice that stretched pretty low and performed her song Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick.
Stars gravitated towards simple, if not slightly bridal, designs, with white emerging as the night’s standout hue. Michelle Williams shone in a Chanel Couture gown with a translucent cape overlay. Michelle Yeoh won the best actress for her performance in everything everywhere all at once chose feathers for her sweetheart-neckline Dior gown. Jamie Lee Curtis, who won her first Oscar, shone in a floor-length, champagne-colored gown by Dolce & Gabbana adorned with crystals and sequins. Moreover, Rihanna’s baby bump, red lips, and manicure combination were a fashion statement when she sang Raise Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at the ceremony. Her Alaia dress had leather straps, a train, and more sheer mesh that exposed her growing belly. Many stars both literally and metaphorically pulled their looks from the archives. Blanchett wore custom Louis Vuitton pieces that were never worn, including a sapphire blue velvet top and a black satin skirt. Ariana DeBose wore a white Atelier Versace gown with Art Deco embroidery, Blanchett and other women chose the power shoulders popular in the 1940s and 1980s. Nicole Kidman, however, took the design into the present with her custom Giorgio Armani Privé black sequined gown, which had big flower appliques, one sleeve, and one extremely pointed shoulder. Rooney Mara wowed fashion enthusiasts with A vintage empire-waisted white Alexander McQueen gown from the renowned “The Girl Who Lived in a Tree” fall 2008 collection.
Meanwhile, the night’s main men made small adjustments to their suits. Austin Butler experimented with dressing simply by wearing a sleek black Saint Laurent tuxedo and adding patent boots with a small heel, a more fashionable take on a dress shoe. Ludwig Goransson, a Swedish musician, likewise scorned a plain suit in favor of a Bode version with embroidered trim and a lovely pink floral pattern. Dwayne Johnson claimed that his girls assisted in choosing his costume, which included a Dolce & Gabbana glossy, pale pink tuxedo jacket.
